Perspectives in Biotechnology Biotechnology has been defined in a recent OECD publication as "the application of scientific and engineering principles to the processing of materials by biological agents to provide goods and services" and the contents of this book, which often describe research from interdisciplinary groups, reflect this title. As such, contributions across the whole field of biotechnology were planned and the present volume represents perspectives from specialists in different areas.

The first logical step in this analysis is to determine from the point of view of the nervous system the nature of the exposure. The nervous system has several levels of vulnerability to toxic substances. Once these factors are understood, changes induced by the exposure can be described at various levels from the biochemical to the behavioral.The challenge is to apply appropriate techniques to investigate neurotoxic phenomena.

In this context, the contribution of this spinal cord region to the appreciation of pain was a central topic of discussion. This book constitutes the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held in El Escorial (Spain) from 22 -27 May 1988 with the title Processing of sensory information in the superficial dorsal hom of the spinal cord.

In addition, there were 29 brief paper presentations and 30 poster presentations which have been summarized in abstract form in a separate publication. The first meeting was held in Jerusalem, Israel in 1980 and the second in Wageningen, The Netherlands in 1985.

All in all we believe that the reader can get a fair idea of the structure and general character of this Workshop. In this context, the contribution of this spinal cord region to the appreciation of pain was a central topic of discussion. The latter were selected on the basis of being immediately relevant to the topic of the workshop and of originating from a laboratory not represented by the main speakers.

A fourth meeting is being planned. The Proceedings present the substance of the main lectures given at this meeting. Sixty-eight participants attended. In addition, there were 29 brief paper presentations and 30 poster presentations which have been summarized in abstract form in a separate publication.
