The 22 invited papers are presented in topical sections on model theory, games and logic, graphs and algorithms, pattern matching and learning, combinatorics of words, algebra of languages, formal language theory, and computational molecular biology. This book is dedicated to Andrzej Ehrenfeucht on the occasion of his 65th birthday.. On personal invitation by the volume editors, 22 internationally well-known scientists from mathematical logics and theoretical computer science participated in this project honoring an excellent scientist with excellent papers centered around his scientific work.

The 14 papers included in final full versions, together with the abstracts of four invited papers, were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 56 submissions; they address most current topics in object software technology, object-oriented programming, object-oriented databases, etc. ISOTAS'96 was sponsored by renowned Japanese and international professional organisations.

The book presents 16 revised full papers selected from a total of 49 submissions.

Besides four invited papers the volume presents revised versions of 14 long papers and 26 short papers selected from a total of 104 submissions.. This volume constitutes the proceedings of the Eighth European Conference on Machine Learning ECML-95, held in Heraclion, Crete in April 1995.
