st th The 21 century is the century of Asia in the same way the 20 century was of America. In terms of urbanization challenges Asia in the current century is faced with an enormous surge of urban population and the associated problems of rural –urban migration, overcrowding, proliferation of slums, housing shortage, growing unempl- ment and underemployment and choice between capital intensive productivity vs. While facing these challenges many bright urbani- tion aspects may also be noted –efficient mass transport systems of Japan, banning of leaded fuels for motor vehicles in Indian mega cities, formation and operation of metro –planning organizations, linking rural/urban development and a general consciousness of urban problems, recognization and efforts to resolve them.

In our earlier study, Frontiers in Regional Development (Rowman and Littlefield, 1996), we examined the distinction between frontiers and peripheries. Frontiers evoke a strong positive image, of sparsely settled territories, offering challenges, adventure, unspoiled natural land­ scapes, and a different, and for many an attractive life style. Peripheries conjure up negative images, of inaccessibility, inadequate services and political and economic marginality.

These scholarly networks have aimed to co-ordinate international research agendas for geographical systems model­ ling and their activities have been recorded in both edited volumes (Fischer and Getis, 1997) and special issues of learned journals (Wilkinson and Boots, 2000; Leung and Okabe, 2001).

Much of this change is particularly evident at the edge of central cities, further away at suburban locations and on the fringes of expanding metropolitan areas.
