It was followed by a rapid evolution both technically and systematically. The presentation of this book in its original Swedish version in 1972 created a considerable interest in the preparation of a condensed edition in English. Hence, the requirements for improved know­ ledge of operational efficiency also increased.

This exploitation straight from the natural resource is something they have in common with oil and metals, but the fact that they grow in living systems places them closer to crops. Natural forest ecosystems are not renewable.

On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the International Association of Wood Anatomists several symposia were held during the 13th International Botanical Congress in Sydney, August 1981. New Perspectives in Wood Anatomy. Extended versions of most of the invited papers presented there, and some additional papers on aspects which could not be included in the congress program constitute the contents of this book, which intentionally received the pretentious title 'New Perspectives in Wood Anatomy'.

(1999) find that forest resources continue to diminish, while being called upon to produce a greater range of goods and services and that calls for sustainable forest management will simply go unheeded if the legal, policy and administrative environment do not effectively control undesirable practices. Although there seems to be unanimous support for sustainable development from all quarters, there is no generally accepted set of indicators which allows comparisons to be made between a given situation and a desirable one. Does the concept of sustainable forest management represent not much more than a magic formula for achieving consensus, a vague idea which makes it difficult to match action to rhetoric? Advances in Forest Inventory for Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity Monitoring In June 1992 the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro initiated a world-wide process of negotiation with the aim of ensuring sustainable management, conservation and development of forest resources.

It was a joint event, namely the biennial meeting of the Scandinavian Society of Forest Economics and the 3rd Berkeley-KVL Con­ ference. Alternating between Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, biennial ordinary meetings have taken place ever since. The papers in this book were 'in a preliminary version' presented at an international con­ ference May 21-25, 2002 in Gilleleje, Denmark. It was initiated in 1993 within the frame­ work of a research programme at KVL: 'Stochastic Decision Analysis in Forest Manage­ ment' and since 1996 extended to the programme 'Economic Optimisation of Multiple-Use Forestry and Other Natural Resources'.

Bioenergy from Sustainable Forestry synthesizes information needed to design or implement sustainable forest management systems for production of biomass for energy in conjunction with other forest products.

In response to these challenges, the present book focuses on the response to stress in terms of case studies which address physiological and genetic characters as well as various metric traits. Finally, a set of studies is presented which focus on forest tree breeding with respect to uncertain climatic futures.. Furthermore a choice of studies is presented which refers to diversity and geographic variation of various species and site conditions, respectively.

More than 25 international experts from 10 countries have brought together available ecological, physical, operational, social and economic information and identified gaps in knowledge related to biomass production and harvesting systems.
