The 26 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 54 submissions.Among the issues addressed are design and analysis of approximation algorithms, inapproximability results, on-line problems, randomization, de-randomization, average-case analysis, approximation classes, randomized complexity theory, scheduling, routing, coloring, partitioning, packing, covering, computational geometry, network design, and applications in various fields. Affective Interactions It presents revised full versions of several papers accepted in preliminary version for the workshop and various selectively solicited papers by key people as well as an introductory survey by the volume editor and interview with Rosaling Picard, a pioneer researcher in the field. Following this new research direction and considering the human element as crucial in designing and implementing interactive intelligent interfaces, affective computing is now influencing the way we shape, design, construct, and evaluate human-computer interaction and computer-mediated communcation. It dwells on problems where "computing is related to, arises from or deliberately influences emotions" (Picard 1997).

The papers are organized in topical sections on case-based reasoning and associative memory; rule induction and grammars; clustering and conceptual clustering; data mining on signals, images, and spatio-temporal data; nonlinear function learning and neural net based learning; learning for handwriting recognition; statistical and evolutionary learning; and content-based image retrieval. The wait for the year 2000 was marked by the fear of possible bugs that might have arisen at its beginning. Before discussing such results, let us step back and look at the evolution of DSV-IS (Design, Specification and Verification of Interactive Systems), an international wo- shop that has been organised every year since 1994. The first books that addressed this issue in a complete and thorough manner were the collection of contributions edited by Harrison and Thimbleby and the book written by Alan Dix, which focused on abstractions useful to highlight important concepts in the design of interactive systems.DSV-IS had its origins in this spreading and growing interest.
