This year, Brazil celebrates its 500 years of discovery. Following the SBIA and EPIA (Portuguese conference on AI) ex- riences, from IBERAMIAâ98 on, it has also become an international conference, with proceedings published in Springer-Verlagâs LNAI series. To mark this great event, the Brazilian Arti cial Intelligence (AI) community organized a special int- national joint conference putting together SBIA 2000 (the Brazilian AI Sym- sium) and IBERAMIA 2000 (the Ibero-American AI Conference). SBIA 2000 is the 15th conference of the SBIA conference series, which is the leading conference in Brazil for presentation of research and applications in Arti cial Intelligence. Since 1995, SBIA has become an international conference, with papers written in English, an international program committee, and p- ceedings published in Springer-Verlagâs Lecture Notes in Arti cial Intelligence (LNAI) series. IBERAMIA 2000 is the 7th conference of the IBERAMIA conference series, which has been one of the most suitable forums for ibero-american AI rese- chers (from South and Central America, Mexico, Spain, and Portugal) to present their results.

This volume contains the papers prepared for the 2nd International Conference on Natural Language Processing, held 2-4 June in Patras, Greece.By theirpapers and their inspired talks they established the quality of the conference. The fairness of the reviewing process is demonstrated by the broad spread of institutions and countries represented in the accepted papers.

FME 2001 took place in Berlin, Germany and was organized by the C- puter Science Department of the Humboldt-UniversitÂ¨at zu Berlin.

. These meetings have been notably successful in bringing - gether a community of users, researchers, and developers of precise mathematical methods for software development. There is an emphasis on tools that nd errors automatically, or with relatively little human e ort. This theme recognizes that formal methods have the potential to do more for industrial software development than enhance software quality { they can also increase productivity at many di erent points in the software life-cycle.

Advances in Pattern Recognition

The book offers topical sections on hybrid and combined methods, document image analysis, grammar and language methods, structural matching, graph-based methods, shape analysis, clustering and density estimation, object recognition, general methodology, and feature extraction and selection. The 52 revised full papers presented together with five invited papers and 35 posters were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 130 submissions.

Some data taken from IBERAMIAâ88 and IBERAMIA 2002 may help to illustrate these changes.

IBERAMIAâ88 was planned as an initiative of three Ibero-American AI associations: the Spanish Association for AI (AEPIA), the Mexican Association for AI (SMIA), and the Portuguese Association for AI (APIA).
